On the last Friday of September, Uruguay celebrates Diversity Day with a massive march down 18 de Julio, the main avenue in downtown Montevideo.
The day before, there’s a craft fair called the “Pre-March for Diversity” at Plaza Cagancha, which people also casually refer to as Plaza Libertad. Right in the middle of the square stands the “Column of Peace,” which marks kilometre zero—the official starting point from which all the country’s road distances are measured.
Uruguay is considered a gay-friendly country, and it’s pretty meaningful that the “Pre-March for Diversity” takes place in Plaza Libertad.
Here are some portraits and other moments I captured there last Thursday.
