Between Two People — Couples by Christian Stops

"Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same."
— Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights

Many people familiar with my work primarily associate it with candid portraits, especially those where the subjects connect directly with the lens. However, this collection features candid street photographs of couples and lovers expressing affection in public.

To me, one of the most important elements in any street photograph is emotion—and what stronger emotion is there than love? I am fascinated by those moments when two people become so engrossed in each other that the bustling street around them seems to fade away. As a photographer, it is remarkable to witness and capture these small, intimate moments as they unfold in the midst of everyday life.

The majority of these photographs were taken with a longer focal length, allowing me to observe the couples without intruding on their space. I aim for my presence to be unobtrusive so that it does not alter what is happening between them. This approach lets me focus on what I consider crucial for getting the shot: timing.

Capturing a kiss is wonderful, but I have come to appreciate that the moments just before or just after can be even more rewarding—a hesitation, a glance, a smile, or simply that unmistakable sense of anticipation. While these moments may be less obvious, they often reveal more. The challenge lies in recognizing them as they happen and pressing the shutter at precisely the right moment.
