ProgressivE-Zine 19 showcases a new generation of vibrant Spanish artists. Each of these 12 street photographers adds to the story of Spain. They make valuable and compelling contributions about their culture’s significance. The moveable feast of Spain continues, and we are better as a result.

Alberte A. Pereira (A Guarda - Galicia, 1964) is a self-taught and independent photographer. After a first approach to photography with his first film camera during the 80’s, it was not until 2012, however, when he really involves in photography, inclined towards street photography, but also towards documentary. A small camera is his constant companion and it is his tool when wandering around the streets and witnessing what is going on them. His works have been recognized and awarded in different festivals and competitions, such as Finalist at the III Certamen de Fotografía Signo Editores 2018, Street photography category; Finalist at ASPA - Alghero Street Photography Awards 2018; 2nd Prize at the LensCulture Street Photography Awards 2017, among others. His street photography work has been published in the print and digital media and has been exhibited in Vigo, Santiago, A Coruña, Ferrol, Lisbon, Miami, San Francisco, London or Milano. https://alberteapereira.com/

Álvaro Vegazo: I’m from Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Spain and I’m a Civil Engineer. Photography is my passion, especially I like Street and Documentary Photography. I started to photograph when I was 15 years old, but nothing serious until 2013. Initially, I got interested in Documentary photography, and while I was taking photos in this process, I had the imperative necessity to take photos continually. It was when I discovered that the streets are the perfect choice for me. I love to capture life on streets. https://www.alvarovegazo.com/sobrem

Andrea Ratto: I was born in Genova (Italy) in 1976, but I have been based in A Coruña (Spain) since 2005. In recent years I have been drawn to street photography, which to me now means a way of documenting society with a critical view. In 2017 I visited 26 European countries with my camera in search of European society. I published the photobook “Europa” thanks to a crowdfunding campaign in the Kickstarter platform. Now I am working to complete the project about Gentrification in Lavapiés, Madrid. https://andrearatto.com/

Andres Cesar: I am a Spanish street photographer, born in Almería and currently residing in the Canary Islands. His adventures in the world of photography began accidentally three years ago, when he was going through a difficult time with his health and began to look for an activity that could also provide some therapeutic value. Some of my works have been exposed on several occasions locally and worldwide, as some of my photographs have been selected for exhibitions in Paris, Berlin and Israel. I have also been a finalist of the SIPA Contest of Siena 2017 with one of its images in the category of monochrome photography. https://www.andrescesar.com/

Fran Balseiro: I’m 58 years old and I live in Viveiro, a small town in Lugo (Spain). My love of photography began about 15 years ago. Since then, I haven’t released the camera. Although I started photographing landscape and nature, I find street photography more interesting. When you go out into the street, every moment, every instant is different. It’s the emotion of going out and not knowing what you’re going to find, relating to people and sometimes knowing something about their lives. I like turning street photography into art. I’m a pretty perfectionist person and I always try to look for art in my photography. I give a lot of priority to composition and especially to light, looking for the best hours. And if I can tell a story with my photography, so much the better. That’s a challenge for me and I love it. https://www.progressive-street.com/photographers#/fran-balseiro/

Guille Ibanez: Born in Madrid (1977) but drawn to Manchester, where he now lives, Guille Ibanez (1977) is a photographer whose work focuses on culture, tradition and human interaction. Originally trained as a cinematographer, he still combines professional film and video work with his passion for photography. The tension between the moving and the still image goes to the heart of Guille's work, and his pictures are often referred to as being like frames from a film. His discovery of photography began relatively recently with street photography. However, he quickly realised that photography was about more than just capturing isolated moments and that the real power of the camera was as a means of exploring human behaviours and stories and as a tool to connect and interact with the world and the people around him. Guille develops long term projects mostly in his home country of Spain, but he also works within the UK and Asia. Religion and human faith play a major part in his work which has been part of many festivals around Europe and America and he has been a finalist at prestigious festivals such as MIFA (Moscow International Foto) and BSPF (Brussels Street Photography Festival). http://www.guilleibanez.com/

Isa Egea Vera: Born in Barcelona 06/29/59 With studies in Fine Arts and a specialization in painting at the Escola Massana, Isa Egea also trained in video editing. She studied theater at Nanci Tuñon's workshop and belonged to a theater group for years, teaching and directing. She has created children's workshops using film or painting techniques in different national and international places. Finally, in 2008, as the result of an artistic residency in Porto, she definitely embraced photography. Self-taught and deliberately free, she has not wanted to study on currents or photographic aesthetics to preserve the "cleanliness" of her personal gaze. Imágenes de Isa Egea

Jose Padín: (Hermano Lobo) A Coruña 1970. Self-taught, he uses photography as a means of expression and as therapy to survive from day to day. Without being pigeonholed in any style, he photographs everything that catches his attention, looking for images that convey emotions. Photograph compulsively with the intention of capturing that image that, being imperfect from the formal point of view, captivates us and transports us to other worlds, dream universes that sometimes trap us and make us feel intense emotions. The images must speak for themselves, they must reveal the photographer's soul more than the photographed subject, they must be a mapped map of the photographer's thoughts. If this is achieved we can say that we have done a good job. He has exhibited several times in different galleries, he loves photobooks and belongs to the photographic collective @OlloAtlantico where he shares gatherings and photo walks with other photographers. https://www.facebook.com/jose.padin.9081

Lilian Alcantara: Keeper of memories, photographer and researcher in Social Sciences. Historian by training, Master in Social History of Culture from UFPR (Federal University of Paraná - Brazil) and Master in Didactics of Social Sciences from UV (University of Valencia - Spain). All forms of life interest me, without restrictions, and photography was the way I found to make known something of the worlds I navigate, to share my constant search for the universal in human singularities. https://lilianalcantara.com

Mónica Murillo: I am from the Canary Islands and although I have lived in Madrid for most of my life, I can say that I have a broken heart. A fan of photography for not too long, but long enough to know that it will stay with me forever. Photography for me is a reflection of who we are, it is emotion, it is like a window to a parallel world in which I choose the moments that will stay forever. This means of expression has helped me to sharpen my senses and sharpen my attention. What used to be walking from one place to another only thinking about the destination, has now become enjoying the road without wanting to reach the end. I am attracted to colors, lights, shadows, gestures, little stories or bits of life and especially, life behind the glass, those that seem to protect us from anything that happens behind them, clean, dirty, translucent or wet, I love them in all Its modalities and with all its reflexes. To say that the street photo in particular is the one that inspires and amuses me the most, it has activated springs that I had asleep and now my eyes are more awake than ever to see things that in another time would go unnoticed. It can be said that now I walk with eyes that 'see'. The street has many things and that is why it attracts me so much. https://monicamurillo-photo.com/

Rodrigo Roher was born in Salamanca (Spain) in 1976. He has a degree in Audiovisual Communication as well as in Social Work (Universidad de Salamanca). Fascinated by the world of art and once he settled in Madrid, Rodrigo took several Fine Arts' courses (Universidad Complutense de Madrid). Although in 2007 he became interested in photography, it is in 2013 when street photography became his most representative style. Winner. Category People.  CENIE (Centro internacional sobre envejecimiento). “La edad no implica envejecer, solo crecer”.2020, Italian Street Photo Festival. STREET PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES. – Finalist. 2020, Street Photo San Francisco. – Best Street Photography Series, Finalist. 2019, –SPA 2018 (Street Photo Awards) "Special Mention ", 2018. https://www.rodrigoroher.com/

Silvia Pombo: studied Economics in the 1990s at the University of Santiago de Compostela and Psychology at the Open University of Catalonia, where she became interested in the differences between people in both those disciplines. She has worked as an economist in Development NGOs for many years, which has made her aware of how much individuals have in common, in contrast to what the media often portrays. In 2014 Silvia started to combine her job with a self-taught approach to photography to explore other ways to understand and interpret the world. She is currently based in Barcelona. http://www.silviapombo.com/

Corinne Spector, I was born in 1961 in Morocco, but arrived in Israel at the age of nine months. I spent my childhood in Jaffa yet grew up in Bat Yam. I currently live in Sholam. I was always a storyteller; I am the eldest of six sisters, and I always invented and told them stories. My passion for photography was born a long time ago. It seems I always had a camera but I never really learned to take photos. I always documented my daily life, and that of my family, and with my camera, I wanted to tell stories.

Frans Kemper, I am a semi-retired corporate gypsy and a professional stranger. Born and raised in the lovely Amsterdam in The Netherlands and at present residing in São Paulo, Brazil. Before ending up in São Paulo in 2003, I lived and worked for around two decades in the Caribbean and the Unites States. I am also a passionate photographer since his early teenager years. A passion passed on by my father.

Juancho Dominguez, I am an amateur photographer and I live in Caracas, my activity is focused, at the moment, on street photography, trying to somehow reflect the pulse of my city, the coming and going of its people in the day to day, its light, its shadows, colours and in a way its architecture. I like the street because it is a world that changes every second. I do not claim anything else that I will give in life.

Lucas Inke, I was born in San Pablo, Brazil 35-years ago. I have lived in Rio de Janeiro, the "Wonderful City," for five years, where I started shooting more frequently. There I started with fashion photography and photo essays. Then I installed a studio in my apartment, which generated a lot of work.
In my personal search, I began to photograph more everyday scenes on the street, which soon became a passion. I usually use a Canon T3i and fixed lenses such as 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and sometimes an ultra-wide 10-20mm lens. It is the art of constant observation, preferably trying to anticipate the critical moment, so that when this happens I have my finger ready for the decisive moment.

Michael Kennedy, is an American photographer, writer, and reconteur who lives in Seoul. Although photography has always been his passport into other worlds, he has also managed to write hundreds of love letters to several women with names that begin with “S”.

Pacho Coulchinsky, I'm not a professional photographer but an Architect who loves photography. When I was 4 years old I suffered a really bad accident and as a result I lost all the vision from my left eye. I do not remember what is like to have binocular vision and therefore both depth and full vision perception. Perhaps this is the reason why the action of looking and focusing was something that obsessed me from childhood, especially when facing a child’s fear that the possibility of being completely blind was always kind of lurking in there.

Rainer Neumann, My name is Rainer Neumann. I am married and live in Ludwigshafen / Germany. I was born 1960 in Rastatt / Germany.  Went to school there until 1979. In 1979 I started my studies of „Tonmeister“ at the „Hochschule der Künste“ (today University of Music) in Berlin with the final exams in 1986. Since 1986 I am working as a Sound Engineer for the Südwestrundfunk (German Public Broadcast station) doing recordings of classical orchestral music. I came to photography  in my early twenties but did never more than the usual holiday shootings. In 2016 Street Photography crossed my life and I fell in love with that genre of art.

René Stuardo, I have lived in Santiago de Chile (Chile) for 52-years - my entire life.
I feel like a real Chilean, and I’ve established an intense relationship with my beloved country. I travel a lot and this makes me appreciate Chile more and more. My grandfather was a great photographer, and he was the one who gave me an analogue Yashica camera. And from a young age, he instilled in me the importance of light as a leitmotif in photography.
I studied drawing and advertising photography, which was fundamental for me.
I conceive Street Photography as the essential tool to capture life, reality; in short: the truth of life as we see it and it moves us when we see that we have achieved a good take.

Ximena Echagüe I grew up in Buenos Aires, became a photographer in Europe and I am now living between New York and Brussels. My life has influenced the way I look at the people around me. I have always lived in big cities with a large floating population, which naturally led me to empathize with them. We are all migrants in different ways, moving around trying to improve our lot in life. I try to capture this human dynamic in my photography, made of hopes fulfilled or shattered, with its drama and contradictions. The odyssey of human life.

and Sara Facio – (Born in Argentina in 1932) She is best known for having photographed, along with Alicia D'Amico, various cultural personalities, including Argentine writers Julio Cortázar, María Elena Walsh and Alejandra Pizarnik. Facio also was instrumental in establishing a publishing house for photographic work in Latin America and for the creation of a prominent photographic exhibition space in Argentina.

It’s difficult to say to what extent our lives will be changed by this pandemic. It’s hard to predict when we can finally relax and count the cost.

What we do know, however, is that many people pulled together to get through it.

We recognised that here at Progressive, we had a part to play in helping people; to express their hopes and fears. Our Challenge drew an incredible response and a real mix of shots and raw emotion gave us an insight into what people were collectively going through.

More than that though, we wanted to do something more lasting. We drew together articles and images to bear witness to this unique time in our lives.

Here is our testament: a special issue of our magazine: COVID19

Keef Charles, The mystery of love is greater than the mystery of death

Bruno Lavi, Corona Department at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem

Shimi Cohen, This is the mask I wore

A varied number, full of surprises: a New York you've never seen, thanks to photos by Dimitri Mellos, the crazy and fascinating Sydney of Julia Coddington, Dhaka seen by the young and talented Abrar Asad, discovered by Progressive, the shades of Glasgow by our David Goold, full of intelligent humour, the social Berlin with a thousand faces, always different, by Carsten Osterwald, and finally the fascinating project of our Siddhartha Mukherjee.

IN THIS ISSUE

Understanding life through photography Street photography is my way of telling people to pay attention; pay attention to the beauty and magic of everyday moments that happen all the time, all around us. Unfortu- nately, most people are too absorbed in themselves, or too absorbed in the little screens of their phones, to actually open their eyes and look around. The message I want to convey through street photography is this: open your eyes — be interested in the world, not in yourself. - Dimitri Mellos

I love street photography Another reason I love street photography is because it doesn’t require sophisticated and heavy equipment, and you can do it anywhere. I have also discovered that as a woman, I have an added advantage and power as a street photographer, because my invisibility enables me to get very close to subjects and work a scene without being noticed. - Julia Coddington

The Story Initially, I used my cellphone for street photography, yet soon switched to a DSLR because I wanted to be serious. This switch in approach allowed me to better respond to the expressions of people on the street: from joyous happiness to overwhelm- ing sadness. Every moment offers a potential story — if we remain open to the possibilities. - Abrar Asad

Shades of Glasgow It was during my trips to London that I developed an interest in street photography. My Scottish-born landscape style adapted to suit London’s modern architecture, bustling, expensive streets and attractive, exotic faces. Humorous advertisement juxtapositions and coffee shop window clichés abounded in my attempts to record the slick, fast-moving world around me. Everything is fine in that affluent world; not so in Glasgow. Of course, Glasgow has its large international stores like every Western city. And Glaswegians stare out of Starbucks’ windows just as Londoners, Parisians and New Yorkers do. - David Goold

I love Berlin You can go to the same place 20 times in Berlin... you will never experience the same situation or see the same person... and that is exactly what Berlin is all about! - Carsten Osterwald

Reflections on City Life - Canto II As part of my ongoing project, Reflections on City Life, I continue my exploration of the intermingling of urban envi- ronments with their inhabitants, using double exposure film photography, across different cities and cultures. - Siddhartha Mukherjee

And pics by: Jim Darke, João Coelho, Takaaki Ishikura, Snehasish Bodhak, Delfim Correlo, Theodoros Topalis, Frans Kemper

We have dedicated a number to Israeli photographers because they are certainly among the most interesting in the world right now.

In this issue, twenty-five photographers, each with their own personality, reveal their beautiful and sunny country, moving between modernity and tradition.

At the same time, they show us the world through their eyes; because Israelis are great travellers, with great sensitivity.

Anat Shushan, Aviram Bar-Akiva, Bruno Lavi, Corinne Spector, Dafna Yosha, Dana Caspi, Dov Oron, Gabi Ben Avraham, Ilan Ben Yehuda, Kevin Unger, Lil Steinberg, Maya Rahamim, Miki Schauder, Neta Dekel, Ohad Aviv, Omri Shomer, Ori Levi, Orna Naor, Raviv Meyouhas, Sagi Kortler, Shimi Cohen, Vered Sadot,  Yael Gadot, Yulia Olshansky, Zohar Ferro
