Kolkata, the "City of Joy" by Miki Shauder

At times, the photographs from our far-flung adventures languish in the depths of our digital archives, patiently awaiting the perfect moment to resurface. They bide their time until we can view them through a fresh lens, igniting that long-dormant spark of inspiration within us. For me, that moment is intricately tied to Kolkata, India—the captivating "City of Joy." This vibrant metropolis lives up to its name in every sense, bursting with a kaleidoscope of colours, a rich tapestry of artistic expression, and the indomitable spirit of its people.

Recently, I found myself wandering through one of Kolkata's bustling local markets just before the weekend rush. The atmosphere was electric, a tapestry of sounds and sights that truly brought the city to life. I was entranced by the vivid colours of the goods on display—fruits and vegetables that seemed to glow in their freshness, handwoven fabrics swaying gently in the warm breeze, and the ornate trinkets that beckoned with stories of their own. The energy of the throngs of people, each lost in their daily hustle, created a dynamic symphony of life.

I witnessed beautiful, fleeting moments, often captured when a shopper would momentarily lock eyes with my lens. In that brief exchange, there was recognition, a shared human experience, before they melted back into the vibrant crowd, disappearing as quickly as they appeared. Through my camera, I sought to encapsulate the pure beauty of these transient interactions—free from the torrent of overwhelming noise, the heady mingling of scents, the sweltering heat, and the heavy humidity that defines the Kolkata experience. Those elements, while integral, I decided to leave to your imagination.

What remains with me, resonating long after I left the market, are the simple, beautiful souls I encountered along the way. Each person I met contributed to the rich tapestry of this city, and in those moments, we were all connected—strangers sharing this wondrous journey together. In these photographs, I aim not just to reflect a scene, but to evoke a sense of the passion, the resilience, and the joy that permeates Kolkata, leaving an indelible mark on all who pass through.
