This Holi, seeking a distinctive experience, I embarked on a journey to the vibrant tribal village of Dangi, nestled within the Gunjariya Gram Panchayat, in the Islampur Subdivision of West Bengal. As I roamed through the charming streets of the village, the rhythmic thrum of a Madol—a traditional drum—resonated through the air, drawing me in like a magnetic force. Intrigued, I followed the sound until I was welcomed into a warm, inviting local home, where the essence of community was palpable.
Here, I discovered a remarkable way of celebrating the festival; the villagers unite in jubilant groups, weaving from one household to another, their voices ringing out in song as they dance with infectious joy. Instead of the usual vibrant powders or Abir, this celebration was marked by the playful splashing of water, which glistened like diamonds in the sunlight. Accompanying this lively revelry was their traditional beverage, adding a delightful twist to the festivities.
A poignant aspect of this celebration was the sight of children, who for the most part remained on the sidelines, their wide eyes absorbing the exuberance around them. After receiving blessings from their elders, these little ones engaged in their own playful antics, tossing handfuls of Abir amongst themselves, their laughter mingling with the festive atmosphere. I’ve captured a few glimpses of this enchanting ‘colourless’ celebration, each moment reflecting the unique spirit and harmony of this beautiful community.
