Penthakata is a large traditional fishing village located on the northern coastline of Puri, Odisha. It is primarily inhabited by a Telugu-speaking fishing community and is known for its vibrant, rustic coastal life, featuring traditional log rafts and boats. This village presents a stark contrast to the more touristy main Puri beach.
Mainly settled by migrants from Andhra Pradesh, Penthakata has a very high population density. Residents rely heavily on fishing, using traditional boats and rafts to operate directly from the beach. Situated on the northern edge of Puri, Penthakata offers a glimpse into the fishing lifestyle and is a popular spot for observing traditional daily activities, as noted by local visitors on Facebook and various tourism websites.
The community is vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly cyclones like Fani in 2019, which caused extensive damage to the area’s boats and low-income homes. Penthakata is characterised by narrow lanes, shacks, and a lively atmosphere as fishermen return with their daily catch.
While it is not a typical tourist destination, Penthakata offers an authentic, raw experience of coastal life in Odisha and is a recommended stop for those interested in exploring local culture and photography. The village is located about 5 kilometres from the Swargadwar area of Puri, adjacent to the Bay of Bengal.
The upper section of Penthakata Beach features a line of colourful fishing boats moored closely along the shoreline. Local fishermen embark on their fishing expeditions at night and typically return the following afternoon with substantial catches. Upon their return, the yield is displayed on the beach according to local customs, where middlemen conduct an auction, allowing the highest bidder to acquire the fishermen’s haul.
Afterwards, women from the village, who earn their livelihood by transporting fish, fill large containers with the recently caught fish and carry them to nearby storerooms. In addition to fishing, the beach is alive with a variety of activities. Some fishermen struggle to bring their boats ashore, while others weave and repair nets. Children enhance the vibrant scene by jumping off boats, playing games, and running along the sandy beach. Together, these elements contribute to a lively and joyful atmosphere along the shoreline.
However, a notable issue at this beach is the lack of cleanliness, with some locals using the shoreline as an open toilet in the morning. Despite this unpleasant aspect, the beach offers a distinctive experience that showcases the region's fishing culture and dynamic coastal scenes.
