Monday 04.03.23

Uri Zilberman & Jay Tanen

This week I was struck by two images which, whilst portraying two polar opposite societies, communicated the same feeling of youth and power to me. They both spoke of freedom, in a sense.

Monday 03.27.23

Keef Charles & Simon Gradwell & Tuna Angel

This week I have chosen three portraits, which seem to be significant in their diversity. The candid portrait is always a challenge.

Keef Charles captured a beautiful expression with perfect light and a composition worthy of a portraitist. Classic.

Simon Gradwell looked for his character in a window and this time he had the colours and the perfect reflection to emphasise a face and hand marked by age.

Tuna Angel in this portrait preferred black and white to emphasize the expressionist sense. There is a nice mixture of sweetness and danger in this play of light and shadow. All three are perfect street portraits, yet so different from each other.

Borislav Kovachev & Chris Talbot & Παναγιώτης Παπαθεοδώρου

A week in which we want to reward photographs that aren’t strictly street, because they are captured moments which transport us into the photographer's universe, rather than simply photographed reality. Images that reveal that the other side exists in our world.

Bruno Lavi

This week I have chosen an image that has two merits, it is capable of stimulating our imagination and is the result of technical and non-random research.

Monday 03.06.23

Nadia Eeckhout & Sam Benari

Nadia Eeckhout

Sam Benari

This week's theme is: coffee!

Two beautiful images struck me for their uniqueness: Sam's woman is a hymn to life with her decisive step and her contagious smile. The juxtaposition with the old lady is a gem. And black and white is amazing. An image that is fixed in the memory.

In Nadia's image, we are struck by the symmetry of the composition. The two rectangles of light, the two men… This one has something funny too, because as Keef pointed out to us, it seems that he is stirring the coffee with an iPencil. And this too has something more than the usual image taken behind the glass and remains fixed in the memory.

Veska Saeva & Ovidiu Șelaru

This week two perfect black and white. Veska's image is a real street one, it captures a moment of everyday life, and it's fresh, different from the usual. Perfectly composed, even the symmetrically bowed man in the background is perfect.

Ovidiu's image is an extraordinary play of shapes and lights. And the tiny man casts his shadow, even smaller. By now our cities are more and more often the realization of the imaginary Gotham City

Tina Manley

Saikat Chanda & Myriam Aadli

Cassian Edwards & Sam Benari

Tina Manley is a documentary photographer, this image is so emotionally strong that it cannot fail to be awarded. It's not just an image it's literature...

These two images that associate with each other are not pure street, they are symbolic images. Human being and nature, human and the universe, the infinite. Here too we are entering the realms of literature.

And finally, two images of English literature, past and present. They reminded me of Dickens and Nick Hornby

Monday 02.13.23

Hatem Salah & Keef Charles & Saikat Chanda

Three atmospheric images, each one represents a part of a story unfolding.

Hatem's character introduces us to the story: who knows if his day will end peacefully. Perhaps in Keef's empty and smoke filled street he will meet his fate. While in Saikat's room – who knows where – we see the meeting of two characters who seem to belong to two different times, the present and the distant past.

Monday 02.06.23

Niklas Lindskog & Victor Borst

Bernhard Wasem & Cassian Edwards

This week I have chosen 4 images following the strong black and white as a leitmotif. And not only.

Niklas is usually a 'clean' photographer, but this time he gives us a selfie with a more marked and blurred black and white than usual. Victor has got us used to his contrasting blacks and whites, but in this selfie he shows us a wide scene and not just the usual close-up... Both have a female protagonist

The strong black and white unites the two images of Bernhard and Cassian. Both tell a story, one inside a train, the other in a wasteland. Strong emotions.

The little girl in Bernhard's image in a sense represents all of us, who observe...

Borislav Kovachev

A conceptual image that made me think about hope. As if in the end there could be a way out of despair. And in these dark times, we need it.

The yield is impeccable, the colors, the composition. Quite simply: a beautiful picture.
