Back Challenge 2025

Cameron Scott considered re-proposing a challenge we faced a few years ago, in 2018, which involves photographing people from behind. This approach invites mystery and introspection, allowing viewers to project their own emotions onto the scene. It captures a sense of solitude, journey, or quiet observation, often conveying mood and story more subtly than a direct portrait ever could.

A World without Smartphones Challenge

Hi folks, the time has come to reveal the winners of the challenge “A World without Smartphones”.

Cameron Scott thought of re-proposing a challenge that we had already faced a few years ago (2019) and it is undoubtedly more difficult now. There will be detractors who grumble because cell phones are an integral part of their lives, but as you know, we are a bit divergent.

Keef Charles explained the challenge: All too often these days, we see people with their eyes glued to their cellphones, so we’re looking for something different. This is not just a case of shots without mobile phones but a greater emphasis on people interacting with each other or at least images that capture emotions other than a response to all the pervasive technology. Bear in mind that we would like to see storytelling in shots that are well composed and meaningful.

Life Without Smartphones

I know it’s difficult to get shots these days which don’t contain a mobile phone or tablet but a lot of people didn’t really get past the hashtag itself and simply offered shots without phones, as if that was enough.

We wanted images, as we stated in the brief, that invoked the spirit of a world before the smartphone, a time when we interacted with each other in a more personal way and I’m pleased to say that many did manage to capture elements of what we were looking for.

The winning image from Federico Borobio ostensibly takes us back to a time when interactions on the street were face to face and the man gesticulating to the child - causing the dog to react protectively - is a lovely example.

Six images shared the same number of votes in second place: Lola Minister’s photo of a man propping up the wall as he converses with the lady on the balcony implies well the idea that people in a close-knit community still go round and see each other, as does that of Alberto M.Melis, with the two women enjoying a direct connection. Cameron Scott shows that people can still have a good old natter on the streets about more than just the weather. Patrice Go’s was a nice example of people sharing the reading experience and Mikael Carlsson’s strong b/w shows how people don’t always need phones and that there are other forms of recreation on the streets. The final image that shares the runner up position belongs to Bruce Saille: a very witty interpretation of two guys conversing with the aid of megaphones at close proximity.

This is a challenge that all street photographers have had to face: documenting relationships between people, small daily gestures as well as exceptional ones. Interactions between individuals or groups. The kind and loving or cold and angry involvement.

The six images that have won are sixtotally different and beautiful examples.

But all the images contained in this magazine are beautiful and in their simplicity, they are in a sense a tribute to life.

Anyone like me, who spends most of their day looking at the sky cannot help but notice the windows. I love these windows, which reflect the sunlight, which light up at night, because behind each one there is a story, a beating heart. So windows are a favourite theme of mine. Windows are the eyes of humanity: outside and inside.

Well folks, the votes are in and counted!

When we asked you to submit your images for this latest challenge we knew we would get a good response. The offerings were tremendously varied and the results reflect this. No surprise when you think that the votes are cast by a Gang of photographers from all walks of life, from all around the world and with differing tastes and passions for style and genre. Let’s not forget though, that the main stipulation was that the windows themselves be the protagonists and this was clearly understood when you look at the final selections.

We have dark, moody and mysterious, light and bright. Public, private and even intimate. We offer windows as Still Life relics or bold statements in Scape images. We see windows from within and without. Some are artistic, even surreal but many, as you would expect, tell stories. Stories that speak of children and their worlds, anxious onlookers of a rescue mission at time of the flood, classic and cinematic bank tellers from way back when. They speak too of birds honing in on the human world, the hustle and bustle of daily life or a waiting. More than anything, as a collection, they speak of moments, such as the sweet old lady looking out upon visitors or apartment dwellers interacting in unconventional style, defining windows as the connection between the inside and out.

**Challenge**

The animals that we meet on the streets of the world.

The animals that are all around us. The overriding concept behind this challenge was more than just a feel good factor. It was a conceptual attempt to make peace with the nature around us, in this moment of climate change, due to the greed of humanity, to the selfishness of us humans.

When I was little I loved watching documentaries on nature, amongst other things, discovering how many different species populate our earth. Unfortunately, almost all are endangered today. The habitat of so many animals is disappearing, taken away by man and the earth burns more with destructive force. Many, many animals are dying in a horrible way.

It’s a sorry tale but with our challenge, we have managed, in a small way, to revive feelings of closeness, made connection again and given birth to smiles.

Inside–Outside Connection Challenge

Wow, we had a great response to this challenge and have some exceptional results.
It must be said though, that we knew this challenge was more complex than others, more difficult for some to fully comprehend.

We asked you to connect something that was inside with something outside. Of course, images based on selfies would have been too simple. Inside “something” and outside “something”; we left the interpretation to you. We wanted shots that told a story, where possible. If there was a connection, all the better.
The important thing was to understand the magic of the concept, to go further, not just to look for simple images. Someone, for example, posted the image of a mother expecting a child and whilst this was a very clever interpretation of “inside” it didn’t get recognition in the votes. Have to be honest, what we were looking for was also the “unexpected”. Not easy to understand, not so straight forward but some got it.
Despite the difficulties, this challenge did prove to be a success. Many participants and great pictures are exemplified by the top four, really professional-looking images. A multitude of others adds to the overall quality of the collection, exhibiting a great variety of sensations, in both colour and black/white.

One of the most discussed topics in Street Photography is whether or not to accept, in this category, photographs without the presence of humans. Before entering the topic, I would like to clarify that for me there are many ways of dealing with the street, and that everyone should be able to develop their own way, without being obliged to follow rules too strict. Just as in literature, I am against 'genres'.

I believe that to be a street photographer is not critical the use of a particular lens, the interaction with the subject, (as I have written in other articles) etc. etc. but have the spirit of the street: the ability to grasp a moment and tell a story starting from the reality. That's why many pictures in which there are no human beings are beautiful street photographies, because they make visible something that does not appear. Someone has called this type of images: 'Still life street photography': images that document what we buy, or sell, things that we consume and throw away... Normally in this type of photography there are no humans, but they have a human content because they show things we use every day, like the props in the theater of life in the street, and so are able to tell a more complex reality.

Also great photographers, recognized by all, have scoured the empty streets making their shots unforgettable: Walker Evans, Lee Friedlander Eugene Atget. They are the best disconfirming evidence of the idea that street photography needs to have people in it.

Winogrand (the “Father” of street) hated the term 'street photographer' and called himself a 'photographer.' He was more interested in taking pictures rather than to classify himself for critics. ;)

Don’t worry about definitions - it is “street photography” or not - Just make photos with a soul! ;)

We use the term Challenge lightly here in Progressive; it’s more of an invitation to share with us your shots on theme. This time around, judging by the response, you were more than happy to so. But no surprise there, we asked you to seek out your more unusual Street shots: Still Life.

We had fun judging the entries. Plenty of absolutely stunning shots. It was also a joy to see the ‘photographer’s eye’ in a new way.

Thank you all for sharing and congratulations to those who made the selections and especially those that got so many votes. They’re all beautiful.

The Scent of Summer

We asked what this phrase meant to you. We asked you to share your images and wow...you did indeed! This is a stunning collection.

Sun, sand and sea are but a part of what this season means to us around the world. There’s romance, resignation, trust, defiance, relaxation, action, protection, calm and exhaustion. All of this and more. The cacophony of life.

I studied these beautiful images, the majority of which were taken by the sea; understandably. Something struck me as significant about many of them. No matter how strongly they depict the scent of summer, they also depict human emotions.

No surprise really, for an image to offer a scent it needs to be emotive; often through the power of body language. Through our species’ use of ARMS and HANDS. I saw the first 10 images in this way:

Hands in her hair as she showers, post bathing. Lover waits with arms limp. Grace and latent energy.
Dog walker’s arms almost a mimic of the iron man. Gravity the winner.
Arms seem invisibly bound as the girl’s hair is pulled by her pet dog. Trust evident.
Arms almost a sign of belligerence as the sisters regard the photographer’s intrusion.
Arms in wonderful repose. One propped behind head, the other gently paddling the water. A man as relaxed as can be, it seems.
Hands moving to wipe eye, other to clutch headgear and another to clutch daughter’s as water drenched bathers depart.
Powerful arms clutching in safe grip or holding aloft the children caught in dramatic wave.
Arms spread wide for trapeze balance of the gymnast beneath the pier.
Arms spread wide in glorious exultation of the sun’s rays.
Arms hanging limp in despondent fashion, exaggerating the weary shoulder droop of bather.

And so these wonderful and varied scenes continue.

A real insight into the summer, it’s mood, it’s SCENT.

Some of our photographers live in climates of almost perpetual summer, others still know the seasons but the earth chooses to offer an inverted view. Sincere apologies to our friends far enough down in the Southern Hemisphere who had to contend with a Summer Challenge in their winter. So following the theme of arms and hands for one in particular... abrazos Cumpa.

A challenge in which to express the essence of summer in the middle of winter during this icy and unforgettable August 2020; a few degrees south of the Tropic of Capricorn? I confess that I have felt it as a double challenge and claim compensation for those of us who are still going through the winter and were subjected to face such a dilemma. But imagination, a virtue that in these times of pandemic has been reborn day by day, has come to save us and here we were showing from every corner of our vast-little world what each of us considers to be the essence of that season...where the sun wants to burn us. But there we are: defiant, scantily clad, on beaches, seas, rivers, mountains, cities, villages ... celebrating life loudly, sweating the joy of being alive, dreaming that sooner or later this confinement will end and we will reach that chimera of full happiness that Summer always symbolized.

The image that won is the image from which the idea of this challenge was born. I am happy that she got so many votes, because I think it is really the one through which you can smell the scent of summer, which is sweet, but also smells of sweat and above all of freedom. Love.

Summer is the moment when the body frees itself from the burdens of clothes and the soul from the commitments of life. Where the sky comes close to us ...

It doesn't matter if the images are in colour or black and white, because the scent goes beyond the colours. And it always comes, bringing with it joy, melancholy, lightheartedness or, sometimes, pain

Stay Safe Challenge - COVID 19

It’s still on the move. Epicentres are changing: China, Italy, the USA and now Latin America.

Death and destruction left in its wake. The fight still ongoing. People still at risk. Masks still evident, for a while, at least.

As a community of international photographers, we went through this together; sharing the streets and life as we saw it.

COVID DIARISED: THROUGH COMPASSIONATE LENS

If we had to choose just one photographer who diarised the change in moods, the changing scene day on day, the joy and sorrow, hopes and fears, it would be Fabio Balestra.

Be it the nature of his job, his love for his faithful wingman dog, or just his passion for the streets, he was out every day. Early morning, journeys to and from work and again late at night; he captured with soul and equanimity the effects of this virus.

He caught in frame the fear, the apprehension. With a disarming charm he drew the hopes and smiles still to be found. He captured the mood of home, his small town in northern Italy.

Fabio Balestra’s is a stark, yet beautiful testament.

This opening stanza remains indelibly imprinted in my brain from teenage years. The image he portrays is powerful and just as relevant today. With one exception, for me at least. The true smoker image is that of someone pulling on a real cigarette, cigarillo, cigar, pipe or even joint. These are the images that best elicit the mood for me. Perhaps, it’s because I’m old fashioned, who knows?

It’s just that somebody drawing on a bong, hookah pipe or e-cigarette doesn’t feel quite the same. No matter. The grandeur of a hookah or the almost caricature volume of smoke billowing from an e-cigarette makes for good image.

The story though, derives from the smoker; their lost / intense / dreamy mood. That sense of time suspended...as they indulge in this pleasure.

There was, as you’d expect, an incredible diversity of beautiful shots offered up for this Challenge.

A wonderful array of settings.

Pubs, clubs, bars and alleys. Houses, benches, streets, wherever. Day, night, indoors or out. The vast majority of these images capture something of that world: the smokers’ momentary escape. Some offer the more social aspect, the communal, convivial.

All, however, offer a moment to savour. A feast for the eyes.

Once again we have had many images, to be honest they still continue to arrive, always beautiful.

The night challenge

A feature of the most voted photos in the Night Challenge chosen from the photos of the Night Gallery by Andrea Ratto, Delfim Correlo, Edita Sabalionyte, Fabio Balestra, Frans Kemper, Karlo Flores, Keef Charles, Neville Fan, Niklas Lindskog, Stefania Lazzari.

The night is a wonderful creature.
It leaves us always wondering about what we don’t see.
It can fill us with fear, but also with joy.
It brings out magic light and darkness at the same time.
The night hides things from us, but shows others at the same time.
The night brings out the stars and shows us also a different kind of human being.
Mother nature embraces the night and shows her respect by keeping quiet and settling down.

I never witnessed such a high response as with the night challenge. It was terminated prematurely due to the overwhelming number of (amazingly good) submissions.
It made me think (Yes, I do that from time to time), and wonder how come. Here are a few of my thoughts.

We street photographers are hunters. We scan our environment, aim, snap and move on. All in a split second. Hardly time to lift the camera and frame properly. Especially the candid ones. Always hoping the “victim” doesn’t notice.
At day time it is easier to actually approach and communicate with people, but who wants to communicate with a total stranger at night on the street. Right?

So, in the dark hours we mostly need to rely on candids. And here the dark is our cover. We scan, snap and disappear, all is a split second and unnoticed.

It seems to me that the night is more generous in offering “different” characters on the street than day. Hence, more candid opportunities...

The lighting is so much more challenging and so much more fun. At least for me it is. Especially our category, which is almost always handheld shooting.

The response from people to this challenge was fantastic.
A real variety of shots!
Some hard hitting, others arty. Some brought out the mood with their tones of black and white, others with subtle or explosive colours.
Unsurprisingly, the majority that made it into the Gallery were colour. With scenes so dark, the extra dimension that colour offered, allowed viewers the chance to more easily disseminate the image.
There were, of course, a bevy of ‘power shots’; those more reliant on the background, architecture or light show contained within.
I didn’t have any preconceived ideas. Largely, I guess, because I rarely have the opportunity to shoot at night.
Sifting through the shots, stopping and dwelling on those that grabbed my attention, I realised that most of the shots that appealed were those that ‘spoke’ to me.
I’m almost reluctant to say... this but one person’s images consistently made me feel I was there. They were very often understated, like a scene through the window of a tram or another looking into a café or restaurant. Many were bigger slices of the night. People silhouetted in apartment or office windows; the expanse of building adding to the mood. People looking more ant-like almost... or the sense of isolation heightened.
These shots belonged to Batsceba Hardy. She has the ability to capture people in their windows in such an intimate way that you can almost hear the stereo playing in the background as people speak. You’re there. More importantly, to me, you don’t feel like a voyeur. She captures such scenes without intruding.
She made me feel the night.
She made me realise that I need to get out with my camera more often after dark.
This challenge was a pleasure and a learning for me.

💦 💦 💦 WATER CHALLENGE!!! 💦💦💦

Water...the fourth element.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was trackless waste and void, there was darkness over the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters.” Water was already there, the fourth of the basic elements...along with earth, wind and fire.

About 70 % of the surface of the earth is covered by water: fresh, salty, liquid or solid. Could we even imagine our existence on this planet of ours without water? Water that refreshes and nourishes us, water that joins us, water that separates us, water that provokes wars, water that kills, water that destroys, water that purifies, water that inspires poets, musicians, and artists... What can water inspire in you?... Can you summon it at will, or must you sacrifice dearly to obtain it?

Few themes are as vast and suggestive for the storyteller in each of us. We challenge you over the next two weeks, from Monday, August 19th until Monday, September 2nd, to allow the water that comprises 60 % of your body to overflow beyond your senses. You will surprise yourself, and us as well, with what you are capable of creating.

A World without Smartphones Challenge

We wanted to challenge the impossible and for a week we asked the photographers for images in which smartphones did not appear.

A difficult undertaking today, because each of us now has an external chip, which he often carries in his hand even without consulting it.

The couples don't exchange caresses anymore but links ...
